Radu Ioanid: A Romania strongly anchored in a Europe of the nations

Few of the one hundred years which elapsed between 1918 and 2018 were not traumatic for Romania. In December 1989, Romania emerged weakened and disoriented, after some fifty years of dictatorial regimes. The totalitarian tendency did not vanish, though, overnight, and the seeds of older and newer hatred continued to germinate. It was difficult to establish new institutions with old people.

The current situation is all the more remarkable: a Romania strongly anchored in a Europe of the nations which jointly create a common destiny; a Romania – important strategic member of NATO; but especially a Romania which attempts to cultivate the values of democracy and humanism.

Despite the inevitable issues, some inherited, other recently created, I dare to assert that never in its history did Romania experience such a period of progress as the one of the latest two decades. And this is firstly owed to the population of this country, who wishes to live in a civilized and advanced society, which the older generations could not have.
